Southern Lakes Region: New Zealand’s little slice of heaven

Southern Lakes Region New Zealand

The Southern Lakes is one of the most diverse and beautiful regions in New Zealand. From soaring, snow capped mountains to a ruggedly wild coastline, golden hill country to crystal clear alpine lakes; even the most seasoned travellers would be hard pressed to ignore its exquisite beauty, with its little towns and townships, nestled in the south-west corner of the South Island.

As the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, the landscape extends from the dramatic backdrop of Fiordland in the south, to the towering mountains and established, international four-season resort in Queenstown and Lake Wanaka in the north. Not surprising that Lonely Planet has chosen the Southern Lakes as one of the world’s top 10 Regions to visit in 2012.

If you only have time to visit one region in New Zealand, and are prepared to fill every moment with high action adventure, beauty and tranquillity, this may well be the one.

Let’s take a quick look at the Southern Lakes three main destinations and how Transfercar can get you there:

Lake WanakaLake Wanaka

Away from the crowds, set amongst breathtaking mountains, Lake Wanaka is a year-round destination. Offering some of the best hiking in New Zealand and home to crystal clear lakes and rivers, Lake Wanaka is an outdoor lifestyle junkies paradise. Swimming, kayaking, water skiing, rafting and fishing just some of the activities to be enjoyed, not to mention sky diving, mountain bike riding and heli-biking if that’s just not enough for you!

Queenstown

QueenstownAnyone who has been to Queenstown (ask one of the 1.9 million who visit each year) knows that one paragraph will just not do it justice. Lakes, mountains, skiing, bungy jumping, wine trails, hiking, spas and resorts, jet boats and helicopters, not to mention a cranking nightlife; really, I could go on and all I can say is GO THERE!

Fiordland

Stunning. Yes really. Let’s just take the Milford Sound and mention the whales, dolphins, virgin forest, waterfalls, crystal clear lakes shimmering in the pure air surrounded by a mantle of vivid green rainforest and towering

granite peaks.

The Fiordland National Park is one of the world’s largest areas of protected land at over 1.2 million hectares and is a designated World Heritage Area – Te Wahipounamu. From kayak and cruise options, scenic flights, diving or visiting the unique Discovery Centre underwater observatory, this is another must see-to-believe travel destination.
